Nowadays we cannot imagine our lives without computers. Everyday we face with these not more fantastic devices, they seem to be everywhere. Since 1948 when the first real computer was invented, our life has changed so much that we can call it real digital revolution.

First computers differed from today’s ones. They were so huge that they occupied whole rooms or buildings. Having being relatively slow they were not faster than modern simple watches or calculators. First computers were used to perform calculations and data processing only. Nowadays computers play a key role in almost every sphere of our life. They are used not only for data processing; they assist us in work, study, and entertainment. Let’s consider the use of computers in some major spheres of our life.

Medicine. Patient records are stored on computer databases in the medical field. The medical history of a patient includes physical symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, and even family medical history. Details of the medications prescribed are stored together with details of any that cannot be prescribed, such as an allergy to medicine. Computer software is used for diagnosis. It can be used for the examination of internal organs of the body. Some of the complex surgeries can be performed with the help of computers. Also, updates in the medical field, advancements in medicine, information about new methods of treatment, etc. can reach the every professional man within minutes, thanks to the Internet and easy access to computers. Doctors can exchange images and messages in seconds and get the conclusions speedily. They can seek advice and share knowledge in a convenient manner over the Internet [1].

Industry. The industrial use of ICT in knowledge fields such as quality control, logistics, engineering data management, and product documentation are certainly to be considered. Demonstration of enabling capabilities of new or existing technologies such as hard real time systems, knowledge engineering, applied fuzzy logic, collaborative work systems, and intelligence agents are also welcomed [4].

Education. There is an entire «sub-industry» of education called «online education.» Online education is done primarily through the usage of computers and the Internet where the student does the classwork from home. In addition to books, video and other materials, self-directed learners often use computers to continue their education outside of, or in addition to, traditional facilities. Either, computers allow students to do less paperwork, because nowadays there is no need to write lengthy texts, student can type it on computer and then print it [2].

Business. Computers allow businesses to create websites, stunning ads and complete marketing campaigns. Computers give businesses access to email, instant messaging and custom customer contact systems. Computerized phone systems allow for automated support during off hours and a virtual operator can quickly direct callers to the correct department for faster support. Instead of filing cabinets, businesses are able to store millions of files using computers and servers. Data can be stored centrally for easy access from multiple computers or stored locally for individual use. Computerized storage saves space and provides a far more efficient organization strategy. With encryption, passwords and replace keys, data remains secure [5].

Sport. The sphere of sport also successfully uses computers. They allow sports professionals to store a large amount of video in one place. Easier access to these videos is one of benefits of using computers in sports. Sports media outlets use computers everyday in their jobs. Writers use computers to complete research on their stories, while video editors use various applications to create vignettes and film pieces about their subjects. Events like the Olympic Games rely heavily on computers to monitor security, coordinate transportation, and maintain match scores [3].

Banking and finance. Computers are used in banks for a variety of reasons. They help bank personnel operate more efficiently and effectively. Computers are used to track certain transactions and they help process other customer information as well. Without computers, it would be very hard for a bank to offer good customer service day in and day out. Computers help a bank save time and money, and can be used as an aid to generate profits [5].

Being very useful and effective tools in all spheres of human being’s performance, computers also bring some problems:

- Health: computers are dangerous to our health. The monitors used to be dangerous for our eyesight. Nowadays due to technological development, they are very safe, but not absolutely. In addition, there are other threats to our health than damaging our sight. Working with computers and permanent looking on the monitor can cause epilepsy, especially with children.

- Data safety: computers sometimes brake down. The biggest problem is when our hard disk brakes down because of the data stored on it. The main threats to our data are computer viruses. There are billions of them and every day new ones come into being. If you have the Internet connection, you have to be particularly careful and download anti-virus programs.

- Lack of censorship:  the main threats to younger users of computers are internet pornography and bloody games. The presence of sexual content or level of violence should be properly marked and parents are obliged to draw their attention to this issue.

- Computer addiction: it’s a relatively new term used to describe a dependency on one’s computer. Computer addiction is not limited to PCs. It covers video games and the Internet and has already been given a label by psychologists, namely IAD. IAD is said to be on the increase. More and more people are spending time in cyberspace. If not treated, this condition can lead to diminished social skills and deterioration in the addict’s quality of life. The newly diagnosed computer addiction has gained much attention recently, as children mostly have been affected. A recent research study showed that some children suffer from computer rage when they are forbidden to play computer games. The results are sudden uncontrolled periods of anger and behavioral traits similar to those of an addict going cold turkey. People with IAD need professional treatment [6].

To sum up, I want to say that computers are practically irreplaceable and we cannot do without them. They are becoming more and more popular and their sphere of influence is growing. They are everywhere, at our homes, schools, at works. None of us can imagine their life without computers, because every day we work on them and they make our lives easier.
